Solidarity is embedded in the French dairy sector’s DNA. For more than 30 years, farmers have joined forces with dairies to make regular donations of milk and dairy products to humanitarian organisations and food banks. These in-kind donations represent several millions of litres of milk each year, issuing from the hard work of generous farmers. For dairy farmers, this represents a gesture of solidarity toward the most disadvantaged populations and support for the fight against food waste. For those facing challenging times, it presents the opportunity to consume quality milk, butter, yoghurt and cheese.
The committed efforts of dairy sector stakeholders have been officially recognised by the French authorities since 2013. A tax relief scheme to offset milk donations means that farmers can benefit from a 60% tax reduction on the total value of their milk donations.
