ENSURE THAT ALL STAKEHOLDERS CAN EARN
A DECENT LIVING AND THRIVE PROFESSIONALLY

Economic and social performance

The dairy sector has long shaped the French rural landscape. In the context of today’s changing world, it is crucial to safeguard the French dairy model and preserve our local roots by affirming our steadfast support for all the actors along the chain – producers, processors and suppliers.
To ensure that each and every stakeholder can earn a decent living and thrive professionally, we need to be socially and economically robust. Therefore, we strive to ensure a dairy sector that is competitive, attractive and diverse, firmly positioned in European and global markets.
OUR SOURCE OF PRIDE
With approximately 46,000 dairy cattle farms and over 740 processing centres, the French dairy sector generates more than 300,000 jobs throughout the country.
85% of all dairy workers live in areas with fewer than 15,000 residents, therefore dairy farms and processors play an essential role in upholding the socio-economic fabric of local communities. With 22% of dairy farms located in mountain regions, the sector is present in areas with few other professional opportunities for the local population.
Furthermore, although the top 5 dairy companies are leading global operators, the sector remains relatively unconcentrated, with businesses of all sizes investing to modernise their operations.

OUR AIMS FOR THE FUTURE
The France Terre de Lait initiative has the goal of supporting farms across the whole of France. To succeed, we need to ensure the economic security of all workers – and farmers in particular. We must also improve working conditions for all of the professions across the sector. Various evaluation methods are in place to gauge the quality of working life, resulting in a range of practical solutions to help workers organise their work.
To secure the long-term future of the sector, it is critical that we do more to attract the next generation of workers. Campaigns promoting job opportunities within the sector have been created and deployed in partnership with the French National Information Centre for Education and Careers , at trade fairs and in schools and specialist engineering colleges.
