Animal welfare

(Nominal phrase)

The positive mental and physical state of an animal in relation to the fulfilment of its needs and expectations.*
Scientists consider animal welfare in terms of the Five Freedoms – freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury or disease; freedom to express normal behaviour; and freedom from fear and distress.

55% of French people feel confident about the living conditions of dairy cattle.

Indeed, this is the first and foremost commitment expected from the dairy sector. While animal well-being has always been an integral part of managing a herd, the France Terre de Lait initiative, spearheaded by the Cniel, aims to put the spotlight on this key priority through a range of welfare assessment tools included in the Charter for Best Farming Practices (CBPE). With 97% of French dairy farmers adhering to the Charter, it is an important driver. After two years devoted to revising the charter and adapting the entire approach, 390 qualified technicians undertook audit inspections aligning with the charter, so that in 2022, animal welfare diagnostics tools were rolled out at scale across France.
